How to choose the right breast implants?

For women choosing the right breast implants is one of the biggest factors when planning a breast augmentation. Picking the right size of breast implants can be challenging for most women. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, changing implant size is one of the most common reasons that women undergo breast implant revisions- many of them choose to go bigger.

Understanding breast implants dimensions

Size- Breast implant is measured in volume i.e. Cubic centimeter, unlike the bra cup sizes that are measured as A, B, C, and up. Implants come in a whole range of sizes from 80CC to 800CC. So higher the number bigger the implant size and more it will project outward. The projection of a breast implant is also affected by its diameter which is measured at the widest point of the implant. For instance, two implants of 425CCs- even though they have the same volume but can have different diameters. The implant with a wider diameter will be flat and will project less outward than the one with a narrower diameter. Shape- Implants can be teardrop or round in shape. Teardrop-shaped implants have more volume on the lower half that gives more fullness to the area under the nipple. Whereas, round-shaped implants are symmetrical in shape that gives the same level of fullness to the breast. However, teardrop-shaped implants give a more natural look, while round-shaped implants have more outward projection and give a fuller look at the top. Although round-shaped implants look less natural, they give a more dramatic level of fullness that many women prefer. Profile- The profile of a breast implant influences how your breasts appear, however, in a different way than shape or volume. High-profile implants are more rounded and higher, while moderate profile implants are flatter. Typically, moderate implants give a more natural look but many women like the dramatic push-up look which can be achieved with high-profile implants.

Choosing the right sized breast implants for your frame

Choosing the right breast implants is vital- but it does not need to be stressful. A number of factors go into determining the best implant size for you. The desired size, breast measurements, tissue and chest wall, and characteristics of your breast are all important in making the right decision. Here are some important factors to consider and discuss with your plastic surgeon before deciding on what implant size to go in for your breast augmentation.

Body Measurements

With a large range of implant sizes that are available, it is essential to understand that not every woman’s breasts and body type will be able to handle the bigger size implants. The width of your natural breasts, shape and size of the chest wall will all have to be taken into consideration for an ideal size of implant to give you desired shape, fullness, and profile.

Body Frame and Shape

Larger breasts whether natural or through breast augmentation can take a toll on the body. Women who have larger body frames or stronger muscles can handle higher size implants better, but even they can be susceptible to issues like shoulder and back pain, fatigue. For those who have a small frame, a high profile can be an ideal option as it has a narrower width. Those with broad shoulders and a large frame can go for a low volume option to give an even proportion.

Lifestyle

Lifestyle factors are also vital when choosing an implant. For women who are active like athletes or those who have physically demanding jobs, getting larger implant sizes may not be ideal. Since larger implants will give them extra weight to carry while working. Also, women need to consider the clothing they normally wear, and if those will be compatible with the size of implant they choose. Breast augmentation will certainly affect how bras, swimsuits, shirts/tops, and dresses fit. Other factors such as whether your natural breasts are sagging or drooping after nursing you may consider larger implants to provide necessary volume or can even go for a breast lift. Also, how much natural tissues you have also affect the size of the implant you choose. If you do not have much tissue then large implants won’t get properly covered- there are chances that the edges of implants become visible beneath your skin.
